Featuring Guest Speaker: Howard Jang
April 1, 2014 - The SFU Woodward’s Cultural Unit has appointed a new director, Howard R. Jang, who has served for 14 years as executive director of Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre Company.
Jang will join the university in August. In addition to his role as the Cultural Unit’s executive director, he will also serve as a Professor of Professional Practice in the School for the Contemporary Arts.
In his sixth year on the TELUS Vancouver Community Board and the past chair of Tourism Vancouver, Jang has been an active member of several volunteer boards and committees. He has served with the Canadian Arts Summit, Orchestras Canada, the Manitoba Arts Stabilization, Tourism Winnipeg, The Canada Council Theatre and Dance, the BC Arts Council Music, the Vancouver Alliance for Arts and Culture, Vancouver Foundation’s Arts & Culture Advisory Committee, PAL Vancouver and the Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance.
At SFU, Jang will direct a unit that has been responsible for cultural and artistic programming at SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. He will also collaborate with SFU’s Vancity Office of Community Engagement, which produces public talks,
community partnerships, accessible education opportunities, and SFU student placements in community organizations.
His talk will focus on research conducted to measure the economic impact of the Stanley Alliance Theatre on the South Granville business district in Vancouver and how these benefits could be realized through future cultural spaces proposed for the South Surrey Town Centre.
