The Surrey Board of Trade and FUSIONpresents proudly present the second annual Music City Surrey Showcase! This musical evening in a cabaret-style setting will showcase the many incredible artists that work and create in Surrey. ABOUT THE PERFORMERS
Colin Sankey is a bass player, composer, and arranger from Surrey, BC. Compared to Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, and Alain Caron, his use of extended techniques, such as tapping and harmonics, creates lush harmonies and infectious grooves that sound almost orchestral in nature. Recently, Colin travelled to New York and won 1st place in the 2022 Phil Jones Solo Bass Competition, playing one of his original compositions Musica de la Noche. He was also the 2nd place winner of the 2021 BITE Bass Contest (worldwide), hosted by Charles Berthoud, and has been featured on George Collier's YouTube channel, with over 500,000 subscribers. Colin recently released his debut album, Reawakening, which has been featured on Bass Magazine and CBC Radio. Colin also recently went viral with his arrangements of Get Lucky by Daft Punk and the Mario Theme, achieving over 9.6 million views between the two clips on Instagram and TikTok. He continues to share his inspiring arrangements of jazz, funk, rock, and Latin music with his 160,000+ social media followers across all social media platforms, and is currently working on his second EP, funded by Creative BC, to be released in 2024.
Argel MDR
Argel MDR is a Filipino-Canadian singer/songwriter from Surrey, Canada. He was one of the Top 10 finalists of CBC's Toyota Searchlight 2021 and the Music Category winner of Surrey Board of Trade's 2022 Surrey Art and Business Awards. When he was 15 years old, he moved to Canada from the Philippines with his family to seek a better life and opportunities. With Sam Smith, One Republic, and Original Pinoy Music (OPM) as his music influences, Argel wants to use the power of storytelling to inspire Filipino youth and other immigrants through his music and theatrical performances. In addition, he is an advocate of representation, anti-racism work, and inclusion. Argel's second single, 'Sail Away' was featured in Spotify editorial playlists, including Fresh Finds Philippines. Argel recently received a Pop Artist of the Year Nomination and an Excellence Award by a BIPOC artist from Fraser Valley Music Awards 2021 by CIVL radio 101.7 FM.
Wilona Joy
Raw, authentic, and relatable, emotive singer-songwriter Wilona, is an artist who has a dynamic atmospheric soundscape. Her distinctly unique sound cut across musical genres and borders with Introspective lyrics and ethereal melodies. Born in Nigeria and raised in Surrey, BC, Wilona’s artistry being influenced by these 2 very different cultures, inspires her global approach to music. Josh Bogert
Surrey-based electropop artist Josh Bogert is a bonafide triple threat. Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, he delivers a distinctive sound that is both complex and candid, shaped by diverse musical influences ranging from artists like JP Saxe to Jon Bellion, and musical icons Ed Sheeran to Justin Bieber. With a natural talent for both songwriting and music production, he takes his own works from inception to completion. As a collaborator, he has worked on songs with Marco Nobel, Arcando, and Vaance, and has shared the stage with artists such as Daya, The Vamps, and Sabrina Carpenter. Frequently on the road with over 300 live performances in his pocket, he’s graced many stages across the country including iconic venues like the Budweiser Stage in Toronto and Scotiabank Center in Halifax. You can find Josh’s music on major platforms where he boasts over 7M Spotify streams and 1.6 M YouTube views to date as he continues to release more of his unique brand of pop artistry.
Tess Anderson
Allowing vulnerability and authenticity to be at the forefront of everything she does, Tess Anderson captivates audiences with her moxie-filled performances. Trying on many different genre hats over the years, nothing quite felt right - until now. After spending the last year in the studio refining her sound, 2023 marks the start of a brand new era for Tess Anderson. Combining the familiar gloss of pop with the heavy grit of alternative-rock, she is finally stepping into her power fronting an impressively dynamic 5-piece band. With an album's worth of new music on the way, she performed over 75 live shows last year, including opening for Mother Mother at The Commodore Ballroom. Having received notable press coverage worldwide and radio play nationally on CBC for her 2021 EP "Onward", Tess continues to build a name for herself in the BC music scene.
Vercenzo
Héctor Darío González Aguirre, known as Vercenzo, began singing at seven and possesses a diverse musical background, spanning Salsa/Pop to Mozart arias. A University of British Columbia Music graduate, Vercenzo has performed at Canadian music festivals. Passionate about music since childhood, he took piano and guitar lessons from age nine through university. Discovering his talent for songwriting during post-secondary studies, Vercenzo released his debut single "Let’s Burn the Dance Floor" in 2012, followed by "Baila Conmigo" in 2013, a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. His performances include Vancouver festivals like Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival, Latino Soy Festival, and others. Vercenzo's music, characterized by infectious hooks and classical warmth, is showcased in his videos "Only You" and "La Ingeniera." Currently, he's producing new singles and a Christmas album slated for 2024.
Jessie Cavalier
Jessie Cavalier is a singer/songwriter based in Surrey, BC. Drawing inspiration from Taylor Swift, Gracie Abrams, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sabrina Carpenter. Jessie released her self-written and produced single in 2022 and is now playing local gigs with plans to release more music in the upcoming future.
Maddy Lofvendahl
Maddy Lofvendahl is a 21-year-old singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Surrey, BC. Growing up surrounded by music she began writing songs from a young age. Her music combines elements of pop and R&B with hints of funk and jazz, to create a sound that is upbeat and soulful. Blending inspiration from artists like Stevie Wonder and The Beatles to Steely Dan and Carole King. Her latest single “Scared of Heights” has a modern take on the influence of earlier generations, with similar sounds to artists like Lawrence, Vulfpeck, and Conor Albert. With more music in the works she looks forward to experimenting with new sounds and sharing more projects. Her debut EP is set to hit streaming platforms in the spring of 2024.
Glisha
20-year-old RnB songstress Glisha, who is from British Columbia, Canada, emerged into songwriting and producing her own music with vibrantly melodious vocals and emotionally-charged lyrics in 2018 after years of making covers and singing in various huge events since a very young age. Her sound is reminiscent of today’s contemporary RnB amidst dulcet tones and mellifluous cadences; encompassing her listeners with emotion as she shares messages from the heart. Glisha’s career in songwriting took off when she released her first single in 2018, Over Myself, which garnered tens of thousands of streams within the first month of release - an impressive feat for a debut song. Glisha’s live performance of this song earned recognition by the Joey Awards, where she was awarded ‘Best Performance in a Recorded Song’ in November of 2019. Her success continued with the release of her second single and first music video, Scars and Scratches, which further solidified Glisha’s place in Vancouver’s music community. She won ‘Best Female Artist’ at the 2020 Fraser Valley Music Awards. Glisha, who recently finished Music Technology course, released her first music album entitled ‘Attachment and Acceptance’ in January this year. The album Acceptance which acquired 100,000+ streams within its first month, contains songs written and recorded during the Covid pandemic times including the hits songs Staycation and Yesterday.
FKA Rayne
FKA Rayne is an alternative singer and songwriter from Surrey BC. The 20 year old artist is already creating waves in the Canadian and international music scene and proving herself a force to be reckoned with. Her unique sound pairs elements from her prior stint as a pop musician alongside heavy, industrial and nu-metal influenced production and song structure. Creating a dynamic noise that draws comparison to acts such as ‘In this moment’, ‘Poppy’, and ‘Evanescence’. Currently pulling in around 120k monthly listeners, and with recent releases ‘Side Effect’, ‘Kill me now’, and ‘Loathe’ all being featured on major alt/rock Spotify playlists including ‘Ready to rock’, ‘Misfits 2.0’, ‘Salt’, ‘Fresh Finds Rock’, ‘New noise’, ‘Anti-pop’ and several others, FKA Rayne is quickly proving herself as an artist to keep your eyes (and ears) on. FKA Rayne’s newest single ‘Loathe’ is a distinctive, industrial rock track, harkening back to the late 90’s and early 2000’s alternative scene. It’s available now on all streaming platforms.
Haleluya Hailu
Born and raised in Surrey, Haleluya Hailu is a multi-instrumentalist, poet, and activist. Eclectic, energetic and constantly moving, Hailu manages to turn the awkward transition to adulthood into songs that anyone could lose themselves in.
Matt Hermano
Matt Hermano is an accomplished artist based in British Columbia, born in Vancouver and raised in Surrey. With a musical journey that commenced at the age of 14, he mastered the guitar, honed his vocal skills starting at 17, and began crafting songs at the age of 16. A dedicated performer, Matt frequents open mic events in the Vancouver area and ensures to showcase his talents at local open mics when traveling across Canada. His performances typically feature original compositions and skillfully interpreted covers, reflecting his diverse musical influences rooted in 70s Motown and 2000s music. This influence is palpable in his soulful approach to singing and his ability to infuse pop lyrics with a captivating depth of emotion. In September of 2023, Matt released his debut single, "Lost in Your Eyes," a song that originated when he was 18. Despite temporarily relinquishing his musical pursuits to build a life with a past partner, Matt faced personal challenges that led him to rediscover his profound passion for music. Undeterred, he resumed his musical journey, consistently writing and performing original compositions and cover renditions. Looking ahead, Matt is set to release his second single, "One Night Love," on January 10th, available on all major streaming platforms. This forthcoming release marks another milestone in his artistic career, showcasing his dedication to the craft and the unique blend of influences that define his musical expression.
Richard Tichelman
Charismatic pop recording artist, singer/songwriter and guitarist, Richard Tichelman, builds on a CV already stacked high with countless accolades and awards, two EPs, and performances on marquee stages from Toronto to Los Angeles and many points in between as both headliner and sought-after supporting artist. Richard started the 2023 with single, “RED LIGHTS", a second single “MISSING YOU”, and is releasing a debut album, “OUT OF LOVE”, spring 2024.
